	Speed Calculations - Final  4/18/2026
	These calculations are an attempt to combine a player's times for the split, 40, 20 yd shuttle, and cone drills into a single time that reflects how well they did in all four events.  I wanted the event results weighted depending their importance to success at the player's position as well.  The four times can't be simply added, because their large differences would give undue influence to the cone time (around 7 seconds) and under represent the split ( 1-2 seconds).  I decided to convert the split, cone, and shuttle times into 40 times using the the player's relative performance in that event.  So if a player runs a 10 yard split that is .03 faster than the average for his position group, that translates to a 40 time that is .03 seconds faster than the average 40 for the group.  The cone and shuttle times were converted the same way.  That gave me four 40 times that I could use.  I then weighted each 40 time based on its relative importance for that particular position.  Note that weights vary by position.  The weighted average of these four 40 times I call the EFFECTIVE 40 (EFF40).  I then saw a need to normalize player's EFF40 for weight.  Did a 320 lb. DT running an EFF40 of 5.31 do better than a 300lb DT running an EFF40 of 5.15?  I attempt to answer this qustion using the formula for kinetice energy.  Physics tells us that the body entering a collision with the most kinetic energy delivers the blow, while the other body receives the blow.  While I realize that their are other considerations in this analysis like center of gravity, direct hit versus glancing blow, etc., the rule above generally holds.  The calculation determines what the players EFF40 would have been had he put out the same amount of energy, but weighed the average weight for the position group.  I call this normalized EFF40 the RELATIVE SPEED INDEX (RSI).  I have also included each players EXPLOSION RATING (EXPL).  The explosion rating is the sum of the players lifts, vertical jump (in inches) and broad jump (in feet).  A rating of 60 is considered acceptable, 65 very good, and 70 is the gold standard.  A few players scored over 80 which denotes an exceptional athlete.  A rating of INC means the player did not complete one or more of the 3 events.

	Note that not all of the players completed all of the tests at the Combine.  All of the information provided is the best of the players performance between the Combine and Pro Day workouts on campus.   So few players are currently doing the shuttles these days and the number is declining every year that this will probably be my last year doing the calculations.
